Use Your Wireless Phone Wisely with Seven Easy Steps

CHICAGO, Oct. 5, 2000-- More than 100 million wireless subscribers
in the United States do a lot of talking on their wireless phones -- although
not always in the most appropriate place or at the most appropriate time.
Because wireless phones are a fairly new technology, no one has laid down the
rules of wireless etiquette -- until now.
U.S. Cellular (Amex: USM) has launched a wireless etiquette public service
campaign to help customers master the rules of using a wireless phone in
public. Customers and the general public can pick-up a copy of the company's
"Seven Steps for Wireless Etiquette" at any U.S. Cellular retail outlet, agent
location or Wal-Mart kiosk throughout the United States. The tips can also be
accessed at http://www.uscellular.com .
"Wireless phone etiquette education is the key to making public places
more peaceful for everyone," said Michele Merrell, U.S. Cellular director of
external communications/public relations. "U.S. Cellular is dedicated to
being a leader on this issue by working with our customers and others to
encourage this high-tech etiquette."
The company's tips for being a courteous wireless user are:

-- Focus on Safety First -- Do not use your phone if it impedes your
ability to drive. Stay focused, and wait until you reach a stoplight
or pull over to the side of the road to place or take a call. You can
also use features such as speed dial and automatic redial. U.S.
Cellular recommends that frequent wireless users get a hands-free kit
or phone cradle holder for their vehicles.

-- Silence is Golden -- Be aware of wireless-free quiet zones such as
theatres, restaurants, courtrooms, movies, classrooms and meetings.
It is inappropriate to use your phone in these places, so turn off the
phone or set it to vibrate. Take important calls outside of the quiet
        area.

-- R-E-S-P-E-C-T -- If you are in a crowded place, please respect the
rights of others around you. Turn your ringer down, keep your voice
low and step away from the crowd if you need to take or make a call.

-- No Need to Shout -- Despite the smaller handsets now available, your
callers can hear you just as well on a wireless phone as on a regular
phone. Keep your voice to a low, conversational tone.

-- Make Amends Gracefully -- If you forget to turn your phone off in a
quiet zone and it begins to ring, don't be tempted to take the call.
Simply turn off your ringer, or let the call go to voice mail and
apologize to those around you for the mistake. If you must take a
        call, please exit the room.

-- Use Available Technology -- All the great add-ons for your phone like
voice mail, caller ID and vibration mode are designed to help you be a
more courteous wireless user. Use them wisely.

-- Put People First -- Always think of the person sitting near you, not
the person calling you on your wireless. If you are in a crowd and
absolutely have to take a call, make it brief or ask the caller if you
can speak at a later time.

U.S. Cellular, the nation's eighth largest wireless carrier, provides
wireless service to more than 2.8 million customers in 144 markets and owns
interests in 35 additional markets. The Chicago-based company strives to make
wireless communications simple, personal and affordable for its customers.
